Bold indicates first Republican Governor for that state since Reconstruction.
May 1872 - Congress passed a general Amnesty Act restoring full political rights to all Southerners thus starting the process whereby Republican governors were gradually replaced by Democratic governors. The Election of 1876 fully ended Reconstruction and the Southern states never elected another Republican governor for more than a century. Between the end of Reconstruction (1877) and the 1966 Elections, all the Southern states had Democratic governors except for brief periods in Tennessee (1881-83, 1911-15, 1921-23) and North Carolina (1897-1901).
