Road Walk & Shot Put @ Ancient Stadium of Olympia/Oλυμπια [AUG 18]
MARATHON - From Marathonas to Panathinaiko Stadium
NOTE: For the first time in modern history, a sporting event - men's and
women's shot put - will be held
in the
Ancient Olympia Stadium.
AUG 18 :: For the first time since the year 393 (1611 years ago), competition will be held at Olympia, the true birthplace of the Olympics. The Games return to the original Olympic Stadium with two events, the men's and women's shot put. No matter who emerges with the gold medals, history will be made, because no woman was ever allowed to compete in the shallow, sun-baked bowl of the stadium. The Ancient Olympics were held here from 776 BC to 393 AD (1169 years). The men's shot put has been held at every single Olympic Games in the modern era.
U.S. thrower Kristin Heaston, who finished 22nd, earned a distinction when she had the first throw of the day at 8:33 a.m. She became the first woman to ever compete on the hallowed grounds since they were first used 2,780 years ago.
AUG 20-21 :: Nesterenko (BLR) is the fastest woman in the world, winning the 100m - an event the Americans have won since 1984. Ethiopia keeps the men's 10,000m gold. Eritrea wins their first Olympic medal ever since independence in 1994 in men's 10,000m. Carolina Kluft is the best female athlete, winning the Heptathlon and the 1st gold medal for Sweden at these Games.
AUG 22 :: In the race for the fastest man on earth (100m), USA wins gold and bronze. It was the first time in Olympic history that five men broke 10 seconds in a race. Four did it at the 1996 Atlanta Games. Japan defended its women's Marathon title. It was also the closest finish in an Olympic 100m final since 1980. In the same event, Kastor gives the US its first Marathon medal in 20 years by winning bronze. Sweden gets two golds today in men's high jump and triple jump bringing their total to three so far.
AUG 23 :: USA sweeps 1-2-3 in Men's 400m, an event they haven't lost in 20 years. The last time the US swept the 400m race was in 1988. Notably, the USA has won 13 of 18 400m medals in the past six Olympics. Irina Korzhanenko (RUS) was stripped of her shot put gold medal due to steroid use, the first Olympic champion to be stripped of a title since Ben Johnson in the 1988 100m race. She was the first woman to win gold at Olympia. Etone won Cameroon's first medal in Athletics.
AUG 24 :: Robert Fazekas (HUN) became the second athlete stripped of the gold medal in these Games. Kenya sweeps 3000m steeplechase. USA goes gold/bronze in 100m hurdles, winning this event for the first time since 1984. Roman Sebrle (CZE) is the best male athlete winning the Decathlon.
AUG 25 :: All women's events today. Campbell became only the 2nd Jamaican woman track athlete to win Olympic gold. She also won bronze in 100m. Fani Halkia brought the home crowd to their feet when she won the 400m hurdles. Her victory is Greece's second gold in Athletics.
AUG 26 :: All men's events today. USA sweeps 200m for the 6th time in Olympic history - the last time 20 years ago in LA. After finishing 4th in the 100m, Shawn Crawford races to the gold in the 200m. Gatlin, gold in 100m, captures bronze in 200m. USA goes 1-2 in Long Jump. USA has won gold in long jump in all but 4 Olympics since 1896! Sanchez, winning the 400m hurdles, gives the Dominican Republic its first Olympic gold medal. Sanchez breaks the US 20yr rule in this event.
AUG 27 :: US, the overwhelming favorites for the women's 4x100, screws up final baton passing and is disqualified. Korzeniowski (POL) wins 50km walk for the 3rd Olympics in a row. Timothy Mack gives the USA its only gold medal of the day in any sport. Russia sweeps women's long jump shutting out Marion Jones. Combined with the disqualification in the 4x100m, Jones leaves Athens with no medals after winning 5 in Sydney. CHN rejoices with 2 track golds (their first ever in athletics) today: a WR in 110m hurdles and holding off two Ethiopian favorites in the women's 10,000m.
AUG 28 :: US men make it 6-in-a-row in 4x400m relay. US women make it 3-in-a-row in 4x400m relay. UK men beat heavily-favored US by 0.01s in 4x100m relay, winning this event for the first time in 92 years! El Guerrouj (MAR) wins 5000m in addition to his 1500m win. Kelley Holmes becomes the 3rd woman ever to win the 800m and 1500m races. Russia dominates women's field events with 5 of 8 golds (6 initially but shot putter was stripped of her medal). Hungarian Adrian Annus becomes the 6th athlete to be stripped of an Olympic medal - in his case, the gold in hammer throw giving the gold to Japan.
AUG 29 :: An American won a medal in Men's marathon, the first in 28 years, that got bizarre 3 miles from the finish line when the leader and eventual bronze medal winner Brazilian de Lima was grabbed by a madman. His determination to finish the race was rewarded with a Pierre de Coubertin medal. The Marathon race took place along the classical route from the town of Marathon to the Panathinaiko Stadium, site of the first modern Olympic Games.
