MEN
Japan won the Team competition for the first time since 1976 when
they were champions for five straight games (1960-1976). Defending
champions China crashed to 5th place. The US took silver, their first
medal after 20 years and third ever. Romania took bronze - their first
ever in Team.
In one of the most AMAZING comebacks in sports, Paul Hamm bounced back from a crash-landed vault score of 9.137 to nail two consecutive 9.837 routines in parallel bar and horizontal bar to win the gold medal by the tiniest margin ever (0.012pts). Paul Hamm becomes the first American in history to win the Olympic All-Around title.
Kyle Shewfelt gave Canada their first ever Olympic gold in gymnastics.

WOMEN
Romania easily defended their gold medal in Team competition
upsetting defending world champion and heavy favorites, the United
States. Thanks to the new "three up, three count" format, the
competition was filled with drama as Romania and the US battled it out
neck-and-neck throughout the night.
Carly Patterson becomes only the second American woman to win the individual all-around title after Mary Lou Retton 20 years ago during the boycotted 1984 Olympics in LA. The US becomes only the 2nd country to have both all-around champions in the same Olympics after the Soviet Union.
