SWIMMING
Olympic Aquatic Centre, Athens Olympic Sports Complex [AUG 14-29]
AUG 14th :: Four swimming finals daily for 8 consecutive days. TWO world records on Day 1. Michael Phelps won his and the US' 1st gold, breaking his own world record by 0.15s in 400m IM, on his way to matching Mark Spitz's 1972 record of 7 golds. Ian Thorpe defended his 400m FS title. For only the second time since 1956, USA was beaten in the women's 4x100m FS relay. Australia romped home with the gold and a new world record (by 0.06s); denying Jenny Thompson her 9th gold. Yana Klochkova (UKR) becomes the first woman to win IM in consecutive Olympics. China sweeps both Sync Diving golds.
AUG 15th :: The US disappoints again continuing a slow start to swimming (1 of 8 golds so far). South Africa wins their first gold in Olympic swimming history, thundering to a third WR in swimming by grabbing 400m FS relay simultaneously handing the US their worst showing ever in this event and ending Michael Phelps' quest for a record 8 golds. Last month, Hansen stole Kitajima's WR in 100m BrS but the gold was stolen from him by Kitajima tonight. Laure Manaoudou became the first French woman ever to win an Olympic swimming gold medal and France's second swimming gold ever.
AUG 16th :: Thorpe avenges his loss to Hoogenband in the 200m FS in Sydney with a win here in the "Race of the Century". He now has 2 golds in these Games and his 5th career gold, the most by any Australian athlete in history. Phelps took the bronze - his quest to equal Mark Spitz's record is now over. Peirsol and Coughlin redeems America's stature in the pool by winning the 100m BS events. China takes women's 100m BrS gold - their 6th swimming gold ever. China finishes Sync Diving with 3 of 4 golds. Greece wins the other - the first gold for the hometown team - after China's men's pair leading by a large margin crashed to 0 points on their final dive.
AUG 17th :: Phelps bags 2 golds today as US sweeps men's competition. US ends Australia's 7yr reign in 4x200m, beating them by 13/100ths of a second. Phelps has 3 golds and 2 bronzes and is on track for 8 medals. US fails to qualify a single swimmer for the men's 100m FS for the 1st time in history. Klochkova completes the IM double repeating her Sydney performance (a double-double!). Only one other person has done this before (Tamas Darnyi of HUN in 88/92).
AUG 18th :: US women claims the only gold medal for the US today in 4x200m with a world record, breaking the tarnished 17yr-old record set by East Germany. Jedrzejcak avenged her 100m Bu loss to Thomas by winning the 200m. She now has 3 medals. Thomas came in second, also with 3 medals now. Kitajima completes his sweep of the men's BrS events. Hoogenband defends his 100m FS title. Thorpe gets bronze for his 4th medal and 9th career medal. He is now Australia's greatest Olympic medal winner.
AUG 19th :: Phelps gets his 4th gold and 6th medal, adding the 200m IM to his 400m IM - 1st swimmer to sweep both IMs since 1992. The last American swimmer to win the 200m IM was in 1968. Peirsol completes his BS sweep but only after his disqualification in the 200m event was overturned by FINA. Amanda Beard makes it a golden day for the USA at the pool (3 out of 4) with a 200m BrS win. This is after winning silver in 1996 and bronze in 2000. She now has the whole set! Jodie Henry is the first Aussie to win the 100m FS since Dawn Fraser's three-peat from 1956-64.
AUG 20th :: Phelps gets his 5th gold and 7th medal edging world champion, WR holder and fellow teammate Ian Crocker by 0.04s. Phelps graciously gives up his 4x100m MR spot to Crocker but is still on track for 8 medals. Phelps ties Mark Spitz's record of most individual gold medals (4) in a single Olympics. Gary Hall defends his 50m title as the fastest man in the pool. Coventry wins Zimbabwe's first ever swimming gold; 3 medals at these Games. She joins South African Penny Heyns as the only Africans to win swimming golds. Japan continues their great run with a gold in 800m FS. With only one day of competition to go, USA will definitely fall short of their 2000 performance of 14 gold medals.
AUG 21st :: The US easily won the men's 4x100m medley relay in WR time. Phelps gave up his spot to Crocker but gets the gold to make it his 6th gold and 8th medal in these Games, tying the most number of medals won by any athlete in a single Olympics. Aussie women shock the US by winning the medley relay in WR time. Jenny Thompson becomes the most decorated American athlete in history with a silver medal, her 12th of any color, in the medley relay. de Bruijn defended her 50m title. Malia Matella (FRA) won silver in 50m and becomes the first black woman in history to medal in swimming. Hackett defends his 1500m title. Swimming concludes with US capturing 12-9-7 (down from 15-8-11) and Australia 7-5-3 (1 more gold than Sydney).
AUG 26th :: Women's Diving ends today with China sweeping 3 of 4 golds (1 more than Sydney) and 5 medals in 4 events!
AUG 27th :: USA fails to medal in Olympic Diving for the first time since 1912. The US won 41 of 62 gold medals between 1904 and 1976. China sweeps 6 of 8 diving gold medals.
