The United States dethroned Cuba as Olympic
baseball champions on Wednesday, demolishing their arch-rivals 4-0 in a
stunning upset victory to claim the only coveted prize they had yet to
make their own - the Olympic gold medal. The
victory was only the fourth for a US team against 25 defeats to Cuba in
official championship events. Cuba won the first two official Olympic
baseball tournaments, in Barcelona and Atlanta, and carried an
unblemished 18-0 record into the Sydney tournament.

United
States staged a dramatic comeback in the Olympic Games softball final on
Tuesday, to edge unfancied Japan 2-1 and win their second straight gold
medal after turning to "voodoo games" to change their luck.
The win was a remarkable turnaround for the United States, who, despite
coming into the tournament as comfortable favorites, had qualified
fourth for the playoff round with a 4-3 record.
