TEAM
SEP 18 - China claimed their 1st ever men's team title after 4 decades of
frustration and silvers in 1992 and 1996; dethroning the Russians and
the Soviet Union who've won gold since 1980 (except the boycotted 1984).
SEP 19 -
For the first time at a non-boycotted games, Romania - land of Nadia Comaneci -
won the elusive women's team title by beating her fiercest rival,
Russia, by 0.205. Defending
champions USA (from 1996's Magnificent Seven) were way behind in 4th.
SEP 30 - Russia and Belarus, both scoring 19.700 in hoops/ribbons and
19.800 in clubs, had to settle for a tie-break in which Russia won due
to its higher scores in the preliminaries.
INDIVIDUAL
SEP 20 - Alexei Nemov - silver medallist in 1996 - led all the way to win the
men's all-around incl. a 9.800 on the floor. SEP 21 - Romania sweeps the
women's all-around. Raducan is first Romanian to win women's all-around
since Nadia Comaneci. SEP 22 - Trampolining debuts in the Olympic Games
with RUS sweeping both men's and women's titles. SEP 24 - RUS takes both
golds in women's while LAT/HUN/ROM takes 1 each in men's. Khorkina
finally wins gold defending her uneven bars title. SEP 25 - CHN and RUS
take 2 golds each while ESP takes 1st ever gymnastics medal. Liu is first Chinese woman to win
individual gymnastics title (beam). Nemov wins HB to boost his tally to
2-1-3; the most decorated gymnast at Sydney 2000 adding to the 5 medals
he won in Atlanta 1996. Final day of artistic gymnastics as Russia
dominates with 15 medals in 14 events incl. 5 gold. CHN/ROM split honors
with 3 golds each. SEP 26 - Raducan (ROM) is stripped of her all-around
title due to a positive drug test for Neurofen, a cold medicine. OCT 1-
Favorite Kabaeva (RUS) sensationally faulted on the hoop to get a
surprisingly high 9.641 score and recovered strongly in ball and ribbon
to obtain a 9.950. She finished with a bronze. Russia sweeps both
rhythmic golds with Barsukova's win.
