February 29, 2008

[once every four years II] I have been caught up in a vicious cycle of endless partying and a back-breaking amount of work. It has been incredibly busy this week and March looks set to be a killer month for me.

In light of that, I am just gonna repost what I wrote 4 years ago when this blog experienced its first ever leap day. What I wrote back on February 29, 2004 seems just as relevant then as it does now.

FEB 29 :: [once every four years] (I had this in my head the other day so I'm backdating it coz I'm a few days late!) It's Leap Day! How fun. Leap years are fun. The Olympics take place on leap years. And so does the US Presidential election. Once every four years we get to right what is wrong or keep the good times rolling. We get to change for the better (or worse), ditch (or keep) the status quo and correct (or maintain) any injustices that have been wrought in the past 4 years.

2000 was the good old days. Way back then, war was still a last resort, war was only started by evil, we only spent what we had and saved for the future, citizens were free from unjust prosecution and had a day in court. Life was much simpler then. How did it all go so wrong? And, really folks, are we better off now than we were 4 years ago?

Tomorrow is March. Progress is unstoppable. Let's Leap forward and March on. Time doesn't stand still for us to ponder over what could've been for the last 4 years. It's time to change and it's time to make it better. VOTE!

I don't care who you vote for (actually, I do), just VOTE! @ 18:15

[priceless] I've had (and am still having) a long and crappy day at work. Much like the weather.

So this -- from one of my co-workers -- comes at the perfect time:

Cost of peanuts - 50 cents
Cost of Crisco - $2.99
Cost of going to H-Mart to buy peanuts and Crisco - $200++
Cost of friends enjoying your peanut cookies - priceless

Aww... They love me, they really love me.

Mmm-hmm *three snaps* @ 16:58

February 21, 2008

[return of...] ...Winter! OMB, I walked into work in 25° weather this morning!! Not fetch!!!

Last night's total eclipse of the moon was tres cool, n'est-ce pas? We stood on the deck with binoculars watching it in the ridiculously cold in between bouts of American Idol *giggle*

And it's also the Return of the Spice Girls reunion tour tonight at Verizon Center! *squeal*

Yes, they are really, really, really here! I am *so* ready to zig-a-zig-ahh. @ 10:40

February 20, 2008

[total eclipse] Guess what's happening tonight between 22:01 and 22:51, peaking at 22:26 EST?

The last total lunar eclipse visible in North America was 6 months ago but that was only visible on the West Coast and in the middle of the night no less. It's been almost 3 1/2 years since a total lunar eclipse can be seen from DC. The next total lunar eclipse will occur in December of 2010. That one will be visible in DC too.

Way more fun is the fact that we will, coincidentally and unbeknownst to us, be in China for the total solar eclipse of 2008 on August 1st. If I had known earlier, I would've arranged for us to be in the path of totality. Instead, we will be on the Yangtze River on a cruise from Chongqing to Yichang to view the Three Gorges. Nonetheless, this area will experience 90% totality for 2m 27s. How exciting! I can't wait.

Almost a year after that -- on July 22, 2009 -- the solar eclipse with the longest duration of totality (6m 39s) in the 21st century (that's 100 years!) will sweep across central China; including Shanghai! I think it would be fun to go there, both for sightseeing/shopping and for viewing the total eclipse of the sun.

The next total solar eclipse visible from the continental United States will occur on August 21, 2017 -- the first since 1979. A rare occurrence indeed! @ 11:34

February 19, 2008

[more daylight] Looking out my window and noting the time, I just realized that the sun hasn't set yet. Awesome! Better yet, the sun will be setting at 6pm by the end of this extra long month! Yay!!

And lost among all the winter parties and miserable cold weather is the fact that we will be springing forward 9 days after that! Double yay!!

Yup, on March 9th, the sun will set at 7:10pm. That's only three Sundays from now. I am so loving this 3-weeks-early start to DST which was instituted last year. Fetch!

Me love daylight (and daylight saving time) long time. @ 17:21

[shop hungry] So I woke up yesterday morning (hungover and super exhausted from four consecutive nights out, BTW) and decided that we needed to go shopping for Asian groceries -- yum.

Tony takes one look at my dishevelled, groggy and obvi ravenous self and deadpans:

"I'm feeding you first. Or you'll buy shit we don't eat."

LOL! I love going to the grocery store hungry :-D

Shop hungry, eat happy! @ 16:59

[not long enough] Oil has traded at over $100 before (Jan 3) but never closed above that benchmark (previous high = $99.62 on Jan 2).

Today, oil soared and closed above $100 for the first time ever, settling at $100.01. It was a little jarring having to get gas yesterday, my first time in very many months. We went out on a field trip to Super H Mart in Fairfax (yes, FAIRFAX!) prompted by an amazingly balmy 73° on President's Day -- I love global warming! We went out in my car; top down, der! My car, of course, needed juice and air in its tires (fyi, Z-rated tires go flat in winter very easily... annoying).

BTW, I want to live in Super H Mart. Rows and rows of happiness. We were there for like 2 hours, buying a cart full of stuff and enough noodles to last me till, well, next week. Standing in front of the soy sauce aisle was like my first time ever at a grocery store -- freedom of choice!

Anyho, gas yesterday was like, what, three something a gallon? I'm surprised it hasn't gone higher. I'm sure by the time Memorial Day rolls around and peak driving season starts, gas will soar past $4. Can't wait.

Tony would be happy to know that Verizon Wireless and AT&T are back -- in a titanic price-war -- with the $99/month all-you-can-talk plan. I think Tony had it once with Cingular but lost it when he switched companies or something like that. I, frankly, don't get these unlimited voice calling plans. Who calls anymore?? I'm just happy with my unlimited text messaging plan. And all for $14.99/month (with T-Mobile), yay me!

And in another big news, HD DVD is officially dead after two years of fighting with Blu-ray. RIP HD DVD. Sony won this time and Blu-ray (it won because of a cooler sounding name than HD DVD, me thinks) now stands unopposed as the optical media replacement for DVD. Am I going to run out and buy a Blu-ray player? Pfffttt. Who watches DVDs anymore... Stream it HD to me over the Net, baby!

And the long, drawn out Presidential Primaries continue today with Hawaii, Washington and Wisconsin. As it stands now (where do we stand?), if Hillary loses either Ohio or Texas (or both) on March 4th, it's all over for her and it's GObama all the way. If she wins both, this will go to the DNC convention in Denver at the end of August where the drama will be played out over live television.

Lots at stake.

Wasn't the long weekend, like, not long enough? @ 16:17

February 15, 2008

[almost there] I've never been so happy to see a long weekend. My liver, stomach and blood pressure (work stress) all need the break. Well, OK, my liver would probably not get much of a break (grin) but you get my drift about needing the rest. And to think I contemplated for a split second about giving up alcohol for lent, LOL. Read my lips -- Not Gonna Happen.

Anyho, all this food/alcohol madness began on CNY day and has shown no signs of abating until now. It started with The Source on CNY, Nooshi the day after for a birthday lunch, followed by the CNY banquet on Sunday. Then Makoto on Tuesday, Peacock Grand Cafe on Wednesday for the first Ladies Who Lunch (LWL aka me, Chris and Michael... Rob was in absentia) meeting of 2008, Sichuan Pavilion for lunch on Thursday and Le Paradou for Valentine's Dinner. Today, we went to Lucky Three for all-you-can-eat dim sum for a co-worker's birthday. And in under two hours, another co-worker and I are headed to Pasta Mia for the first time for dinner.

My belly is about to explode. I shudder to think how many pounds I've gained since CNY began, not to mention all the alcohol I've drank with all those rich meals. I can't take it anymore.

I either need to enroll in the Lindsay-Mary-Kate school of bulimia... Or stop eating until after President's Day. Either way, I'm going to be a hungry raving bitch all weekend. What's new right? *giggle*

Speaking of Le Paradou... Food? Fantastic. Price? Outrageous. Service? Atrocious to the point I wouldn't even consider going back there, not for all the good food in their kitchen. It was that bad. Even if they had charged half the price they charged, the service was still shockingly inept. If I have to ask for the wine list, bread and/or water in a $115/head minimum restaurant, something's not right.

But we still spent 5 hours there. Commiserating with our table neighbors who were this fetch couple from Potomac. We kept each other sane throughout our interminable wait for food or, well, just about everything. We were there so late we missed the last Metro home!

I am so ready for a detox/rehab/decompressing/relaxing weekend. Bring it!

p.s. I love 60° weather! @ 16:31

[vday bears] Happy Love You Long Time Day to everyone! Muah, licks, hugs and kisses all around.

Look what I got for Valentine's Day this morning (in my underwear drawer of all places) *geisha giggle*:

Aren't they cute? (Hmm, is he calling me a bear??)

I'm cute and he wants me... *geisha giggle*

[here we go] Malaysia's 11th Parliament was dissolved today by the King (DYMM SPB Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin), paving the way for the nation's 12th general elections since independence in 1957.

This next election -- on March 8th -- is way early considering that the current Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's term does not expire for 16 more months. 222 seats in the lower house (Dewan Rakyat) will be contested. Control of 12 of the 13 states will be determined as well. 10.9 million voters (out of a population of 27 million) will be eligible to vote. Sadly, I cannot vote absentee or from overseas :-(

The most recent election saw PM Badawi's 14-party National Front (Barisan Nasional) coalition win 91% of the 219 seats and 64% of the national vote; their most successful election ever. BN also controlled all but one of the 13 states (Kelantan has been under the opposition since 1990). BN has never won less than a two-thirds majority (and the ability to change the Constitution) in all 11 elections to date except for the one in 1969; which resulted in racial riots that suspended Parliament for two years.

PM Badawi is Malaysia's fifth PM (since 10/31/2003) and will certainly win the upcoming elections and stay on as PM. An alternate outcome is almost unimaginable in this country that is 61% Malay/indigenous, 24% Chinese and 7% Indian.

Nonetheless, I see racial politics and trouble ahead for this election. One thing's for sure: It's gonna be real exciting! @ 17:47

[cold... and fat] It was 26° this morning on my way to work. Not as bad as yesterday but still bloody cold. It hasn't risen above freezing since 6pm on Sunday!

I'm c-c-c-old and fah-REEE-zing!

Oh, and fat too. I gained THREE pounds over the CNY weekend *shriek*. It didn't help that Tony and I made two batches of CNY peanut cookies over consecutive weekends and ate while we baked. We did give most of them away but we still have secret stashes at home to pig out on *giggle*.

If I can say so myself, the cookies are delish. And if you haven't gotten any from me, well, you're just not fetch.

I love CNY! I love peanut cookies! I love CNY banquet food and shark's fin soup!

I miss my family... :-( @ 11:55

February 11, 2008

[my beyonce] Nicole sent me this one. I thought it was cute :-)

4 Catholic Mothers

Four Catholic ladies are having coffee together, discussing how important their children are.

The first one tells her friends, "My son is a priest. When he walks into a room, everyone calls him 'Father'."

The second Catholic woman chirps, "Well, my son is a Bishop. Whenever he walks into a room, people say, 'Your Grace'."

The third Catholic woman says smugly, "Well, not to put you down but my son is a Cardinal. Whenever he walks into a room, people say 'Your Eminence'."

The fourth Catholic woman sips her coffee in silence.

The first three women give her this subtle "Well...?"

She replies, "My son is a gorgeous, 6'4", hard bodied, malestripper. Whenever he walks into a room, women say, 'My God....'"

Or as I would say, "(Oh) My Beyonce!" ;-) @ 14:55

[bee-yotch] TWENTY fucking degrees?? 9°F windchills! That's -13°C!!

Ugh. I had a cold-induced headache walking to work this morning, that was how cold it was. The cold-front-driven and hair-flattening winds (55mph gusts!) yesterday gave way to a bitter cold that sliced temps by half from when we got to the CNY banquet at 6pm and when we hit a low of 17° at 6 this morning.

BTW, the CNY banquet was a-ma-zing. We sat through 11 courses of ridiculously large dishes for 3.5 hours at Hollywood East Cafe in Silver Spring/Wheaton. I was certifiably pregnant when we left the restaurant. Pictures to follow (of the food, not of me pregnant :-p).

Anyho, back to the ridick cold. I mean, just last week we had two consecutive days of record-breaking highs -- 74° on Wed 6th (which smashed the previous record of 69° set 70 years ago), and 64° on Thu 7th (which tied the old record set 120 years ago!). I have no idea what's wrong with Mother Nature these days. Last week she was having hot flashes (loved it!) and now she's all frigid and shit. WTF?!

What a bee-yotch. I am *so* done with her.

p.s. I *really* should stop complaining... -40°!!! @ 11:11

February 9, 2008

[gastronoheavens] I really detest quoting Forbes articles (that Republicunt rag), but this article about the World's top restaurant cities makes for a salivatingly delicious read.

How do you get on that list? Here are the criteria in a gist:

1. There must be a critical mass of people eager to spend money on going out to eat -- both locals and tourists.

2. The best restaurants must be among the best in the entire world, not facsimiles or near-misses.

3. There must be an indigenous cuisine that drives the native food culture.

4. There should be a commitment by the city itself to celebrate its food cultures.

5. There must be a sector of high-end restaurants whose standards of service, decor and amenities are as fine as they can be.

So where are these cities? *drumroll*

New York, London, Paris, Tokyo, Rome, Hong Kong, San Francisco, New Orleans, Barcelona, Brussels.

I couldn't agree with this list more; not just because they are all universally famous for their food but because I would fly to any of those alluring destinations faster than you can say "let's go eat". Just reading the names of those cities makes me hungry (for my usual noodle soup brunch on weekends!) and want to fly there immediately and just eat my way through a weekend in that city. I do have to say that I have never been to Barcelona (not from lack of trying) or Brussels (I mean, really?) which means I have to go to both cities. Pronto. In addition to those two, only Rome and New Orleans are not also global cities in their own right. But they both deserve to be on that list.

I love food and I love these newly crowned citadels of gastronomy! :-) @ 10:17

February 8, 2008

[cny @ the source] Last night's dinner at The Source by Wolfgang Puck -- his first restaurant in DC -- in the new Newseum was spectacular. We went with two of my Malaysian co-workers to usher in the Year of the Rat and we had a complete blast over the 3-hour, 10-course meal.

Check out the CNY menu by Executive Chef Scott Drewno.

All in all, it was a pretty traditional with a minor fusion twist to the whole thing which was perfect and what I wanted. I am so not a big fan of Asian-fusion (or pan-Asian) it's not even worth mentioning.

[L] Shrimp toast -- the perfect start. And great with champagne!
[C] They look plain, but they were the best spring rolls. Ever!
[R] This was the highlight of the evening, IMHO. Phenomenoodles.

[L] The fish was as expected -- HK-style and delish.
[C] Presentation was not his forte, but the lobster curry was subtle and yummy. The curry def did not drown out the sweet, succulent taste of the lobster.
[R] The dumplings were FIERCE!!! The duck was pretty good too.

[L] OMB, the lamb chops were TDF.
[C] I didn't take piccies of the red bean sorbet (looked plain). The wonton thingie had a molten center chocolate cake in it. I could eat this dessert every night.
[R] Our takeout pineapple cake! (which was yucky)

[L] The hungry foursome
[C] With Julee and Soon!
[R] Me and Tony lookin' fabulous in red

You definitely need a lot of prosperity to have dined there i.e. it was pricey (esp. with the wine pairing)... but also very yummy!

Oh, and this is the cutest thing... The chef (obvi a Caucasian fella) wrote out the Chinese character for "Rat" on the menu. Fun! Check out his writing (left) and the actual character (right):

Not bad for a white boy... ;-) @ 10:21

February 7, 2008 - 新年快乐!

[mo' parties] Chuckalicious is having his pre-bday bash at his crackpad this Saturday and bitched me out for not having viewed his eVite. After I told him I already have a competing dinner party that night i.e. I'll be late, bitch says to me:

"How long does it take to eat noodles? Or peel edamame?"

LOL! Loves it.

Since he loves his prescriptions, I'm thinking of buying him a Colombian village for his bday (OK, he asked for it). Natch.

I have tonight's dinner, Saturday's dinner party and bday party, Sunday is the big CNY banquet, then next Tues is the Potomac Primary where Clinton and Obama will fight over DC, MD and VA... Vodka is mandatory, of course.

My poor liver. @ 16:42

[google rat] If you use Google as much I do (i.e. more than 100 times a day), you've probably already seen their cute lil' Ratatouille-meets-CNY logo today:

The Chinese character on the bottom right means prosperity.

I love Google. @ 14:17

[clean and healthy] Wow, I totarry did not expect such an amazing clean bill of health from my doctor. My cholesterol has plunged to a shockingly low 130 with very high HDL (aka good cholesterol) levels. All my organ functions are fine (incl. my liver, surpwise!) and everything else checked out fine.

In short, he was not only impressed, he basically said I should get off the high blood pressure meds and he'll see me next year i.e. no 6-month follow-up necessary!

He said to me, "Whatever you're doing, keep doing it". Which basically means I can keep drinking, LOL! And also pig out royally for CNY weekend.

Yay, my doctor loves me... long time! :-D @ 10:04

[xin nian kuai le!] Happy Chinese New Year!!!

恭喜發財! (Gong Xi Fa Cai!)
May Prosperity Be With You

紅包拿來! (Hong Bao Na Lai!)
Give Me My Red Packet (with money inside)!

It's the Year of the Earth Rat (4706). If you must know, the rat is the first of the twelve animals in the Chinese zodiac. Yup, a new 12-year cycle has begun. And the rat replaces the pig as China enters its Olympic year.

Did everybody wear red today?? I did. Four articles of clothing, even -- shirt, belt, socks and, um, underwear :-D

My co-workers and I are celebrating by going to Wolfgang Puck's The Source (@ The Newseum) tonight for a blow-out special tasting menu dinner that "has an element of good fortune associated with each dish", whatever that means. I'm thinking it's fusion food? Who knows... All's I know is I can't wait!! @ 09:57

[fabulous and gay] Overheard at Evan's 28th birthday drunk brunch @ Beacon (der, where else) and JR's (double der) for Super Bowl 42:

"8 seconds is a *long* time when you're bull-riding"
"Spoken like a true bottom"

"You know what fag stands for, right? Fabulous and Gay"

"How many Weight Watchers Points is cum?"
"I dunno, but I'm on a diet so I can't swallow tonight"

"As in so much in life, just put it in your mouth and suck on it"

"One of my nipples is pierced"
"Why only one?"
"Coz it hurt so fucking much I couldn't do the other!"

I wish I knew who said what but I was way too drunk to remember. The insanity of Super Bowl Sunday (go Giants!) started at 12:30 and did not end until 12 hours later with me stuffing my face in leftover chicken rice, LOL.

I barely remember the game (except the last 30 seconds when the Giants scored and the whole bar shook), and when I was watching the ads I was seeing double, LOL. Fun times.

Here are some pics from yesterday...

The birthday boy!

[L] The Drunk Brunch crew @ Beacon -- the scene of so many all-you-can-drink mimosathons

[sinewy] I went for my full physical today and Dr Harry was very, very impressed with my blood pressure (110/74) considering that I had gotten off my subtherapeutic dosage of Lisinopril (OK, I ran out :-p) a few weeks ago.

Then the real fun started when I had to completely disrobe and he scoured my entire almost-naked body for funky skin stuff. It was quite disconcerting and I felt kinda self-conscious (OK, very). It's weird to have someone see you naked AND touch you all over in a non-sexual way. Bizarre.

During the last physical, he found a malformed mole on me and he sent me to the dermatologist who subsequently scalpelled a chunk of my shoulder for a biopsy leaving a hole so big you could stick a chopsticks in. Not fun. He didn't find anything this time around, phew.

And then he played with my balls a lil' bit at which point I decided I had to concentrate on something decidedly not stimulating because, well, he's hot ;-)

Anyho, I also got an EKG which I thought was weird coz I've never had one before but it was kinda interesting nonetheless. They had some substitute person doing the EKG and she also drew my blood which was a shriek-inducing experience coz she jabbed it in me so hard I thought it was gonna come out the other side. The pee test reminded me of my first one there where I will forever remember to write my name on the cup *before* pee-ing into it, mmm-hmm.

Long story short, Dr Harry made my day when he took one look at my undressed state and described my body frame as "sinewy". I had to look it up but it means "lean and muscular". LOL!

I have never been called that before... *beams*

So sad that I may never go back to Dr Harry again coz the practice he works for no longer takes my insurance. I don't even want to know how much this physical is going to cost me. But I'm definitely going to miss him long time, sigh. @ 20:47

February 1, 2008

[kl-s'pore] 35 years of duopoly and dominance by Malaysia Airlines (MAS) and Singapore Airlines (SIA) on the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore route came crashing down yesterday with the introduction of three budget carriers on this route -- daily service by SIA's Tiger Airways and Qantas' Jetstar Asia, and twice daily by Air Asia.

For years, customers in both countries have been subjected to exorbitant and extortionist fares due to the cozy arrangement by the two national flag carriers which fixed fares, coordinated schedules and split revenues on this highly travelled, protected and lucrative route.

And because of that anti-competitive and anti-consumer business tactic, MAS and SIA literally owned that route offering 26 flights a day and charging close to $400 r/t for a 208-mile flight, making it one of the most, if not THE most expensive route in the world. Imagine that $400 is the lowest and only fare to fly from DC to NYC. Shocking.

It is the worst of government regulation when two airlines can charge $1/mile with their monopoly powers. That's more than 3 times what the average US airline charges for flights of distances under 250 miles, and SEVEN times the average cross-country fare!

Come 2009 with the ASEAN's Open Sky Policy, the KL-S'pore route will be fully liberalized and budget carriers will be able to offer as many flights as they want and at any hour of the day. That policy will also remove air restrictions between the capital cities of the 10 ASEAN (Association of South-East Asian Nations) member countries.

The quasi-liberalization of Asia's fourth busiest route (2.5mn passengers last year!) is a historic day indeed. You have NO idea how excited I am about this news. I fly this route everytime I visit my parents and I cannot wait for the lower fares the next time! @ 14:03
