DAY 2
JUNE 3, 2001
- INSIDE PASSAGE
Sunrise/Sunset: 0521 - 2156
"For people who inhabit the communities along the Alaskan Panhandle, the Inside Passage is a transportation corridor, a lifeline to the outside world. For the cruise passengers, this 1000-mile waterway is a constant revelation. Protected by offshore islands an tempered by Kuroshio (Japan current), this vast maze of deep channels, quiet bays and lovely forested islands is as beautiful as it was when Captain Vancouver discovered it 200 years ago."
The ship sailed from Vancouver and entered Seymour Narrows in the Canadian Inside Passage at 1:40am. The Narrows is a stretch of water 750m wide where the currents can run up to 16 knots at maximum flood. Therefore, our transit time of the narrows was as close to slack water as possible. The ship steered westerly courses through the Scenic Johnstone and Queen Charlotte Strait. At 9:25am, the ship passed Pine Island and altered course to the North towards Bella Bella and then proceeding towards Laredo Sound and Principe Channel. At around midnight, the Canadian Pilots were disembarked at Triple Island Pilot Station and the ship's clocks were set back one hour as we switched from Pacific Daylight Time (GMT -7) in British Columbia, Canada to Alaskan Daylight Time (GMT -8). The Sea Princess proceeded towards the Canada/USA international boundary.
